Common Commands
You can train your puppy or dog to understand and obey a number of commands. Here are a few ideas to get you started:
- Come - for getting your puppy to come back to you.
- Crate time/bed time - very useful for getting your puppy to go to his bed.
- Down - to get the puppy to lie down on his chest.
- Drop it - for dropping toys or things you don't want your pup to chew.
- Fetch - for fetching toys and bringing them back to you, great for playtime.
- Gently - when taking food or a toy from a person's hand.
- Heel - to get the puppy to walk by the side of your leg, not way out in front pulling you along or dragging along behind.
- Leave it - good for getting your puppy to walk on by and leave things it would otherwise be interested in.
- Off - for getting off the kitchen counter, sofa, bed etc.
- Paw - when the puppy is in the sit position it can give you once of its paws so you can 'shake hands'.
- Roll Over - when the puppy is in the down position use a treat in your hand to get it to roll on its back and over on to its tummy again.
- Sit - a really useful command for getting your puppy to sit.
- Stay - also really useful for getting your puppy to stay as you answer the door, go to a different room etc.
- Stop - when out walking this is a useful command for stopping before you cross the road.
- Take it - for taking the treat, taking the toy etc.
- Walkies - a well known puppy favourite - time to go for a walk!
- Watch me - to get the puppy's attention focused back on you.
