Puppy Medication
Occasionally you may have to administer medication to your puppy. This needn't be anything to be worried about as long as you follow all instructions given to you carefully. Most types of medicine designed for home use come in the form of tablets, capsules, liquids or syrups. Most are designed to be taken orally through your puppy's mouth.
Always follow the instructions given to you on the medicine and by your veterinary surgeon. Administer the full amount of medication to your puppy the number of times it instructs you to do so, unless your vet says otherwise.
You may be sold medicine by your vet, or he/she may tell you what to get and leave it to you to obtain in. If this is the case you should shop around to find the best deal. The Internet provides a great place to find cheaper medication, however, only buy from reputable dealers and only if you know the exact medication your puppy requires.
Useful tips for administering the medicine correctly:
- Read the whole label very carefully before you start.
- Find out if the medicine should be given with food or on an empty stomach.
- Place the puppy on a surface where they can't fall off and hurt themselves. On the floor or on your lap are good places.
- Ask a family member or friend to help you hold the puppy while you administer it.
If you have to give tablets to your puppy these can sometimes be crushed up and disguised with the puppy's food.
