Puppy Care
A healthy puppy is a happy puppy. Some illnesses and conditions that dogs are susceptible to can be prevented with proper care, regular exercise and a healthy diet. In particular you should aim to:
- Feed your pet a balanced and varied diet, making sure it gets all the nutrients he/she needs.
- Always have fresh water available for your puppy.
- Keep your puppy exercised regularly, although be careful not to over walk young dogs.
- Keep up to date with vaccinations and check ups at the vets.
After a short while of having your puppy you will get to know what is normal in terms of appearance and behaviour for him. Always be on the look out for any signs that your puppy may be ill or having a problem. If you are at all worried seek the advice of a veterinary surgeon.
Signs to look out for include:
- An abnormal discharge from the nose, eyes or elsewhere.
- Abnormal lumps, limping, or difficulty standing up or lying down.
- Abnormal behaviour such as sudden viciousness, or tiredness.
- Loss of appetite, sudden weight loss or gain, or excessive water consumption.
- Difficult, abnormal, or uncontrolled waste.
- Excessive head shaking, scratching, or licking or biting parts of the body.
- Dandruff, loss of hair, or a dull coat.
- Foul breath.
Make sure you are aware of the common ailments and diseases for your breed of puppy.
Keeping up to date with pet insurance for your puppy will give you piece of mind regarding your animal's health.
