The Puppy Guide: All you need to know about getting and looking after a puppy.

How and why should I socialise my puppy?

Socialising your puppy from as early an age as possible is really important.

All puppies go through a period somewhere between 10 and 20 weeks, where they begin to experience fear. During this time the puppy learns how to react to new situations, sounds, smells, people, other dogs etc. If the fear is reinforced the puppy may always react in a fearful or aggressive way throughout its life.

For example, if the puppy is afraid when he first hears a police car and the owner reacts by picking up the puppy, comforting it, and giving it treats in sympathy, the puppy will think that responding in a fearful way is a good thing. In this kind of situation the fear should be ignored and distraction techniques could be used by playing with the puppy, for example. If the puppy reacts in a positive way praise should be given. It is important for your pup to socialise with other dogs so he can learn how to behave around them.

You may be able to find a puppy socialisation class near you. When you meet other owners with their dogs try to react in the same way you would like your puppy to: don't be afraid, instead talk to the owner then pat the dog in a friendly way. Remember to ignore or distract negative behaviour and reward and praise positive behaviour.
