How do I introduce my puppy to our other pets and our children?
Before bringing a new puppy home make sure you discuss the puppy's arrival with your children. Children should be taught how to react to and handle the puppy. For example they should not tease it or pull its tail, and should try not to get too excited as this will encourage the puppy to be excitable. Make sure the children know what the puppy is allowed and not allowed to do, e.g. whether it can go on the furniture or into bedrooms.
When bringing the puppy home for the first time try to make the first meetings with the children and other animals positive experiences. Keep everyone calm and have lots of treats to reward your puppy for calm behaviour. If your puppy gets over excited and behaves in a way you do not want it to (for example by jumping up and mouthing), you should tell the puppy 'no' firmly then ignore the puppy for a few seconds.
When introducing your puppy to other animals let them get close and smell each other. If this goes well you can allow them to play under your supervision but do not leave them alone together until you are positive they get along well.
