The Puppy Guide: All you need to know about getting and looking after a puppy.

How do I stop my puppy from mouthing and play biting?

There are some very simple ways to discourage your puppy from behaving in a way that you don't want him to:

  • Say 'no' confidently and firmly.
  • Ignore him by avoiding eye contact and turning your back for a few seconds or until the behaviour has stopped.
  • Praise and reward your puppy's positive behaviour.
  • Use distraction to get the puppy to behave as you want him/her to.

Praise and reward can take a number of forms:

  • verbal praise - saying 'good boy' in a positive tone of voice.
  • physical praise - stroking and patting your pup.
  • rewarding him with a tasty food treat.
  • rewarding him with a favourite toy.

Distraction works by taking the puppy's mind off what he was doing and redirecting it into something positive. For example, if you find your puppy chewing a glove or slipper, take it away saying 'no' firmly, and quickly replace it with a chew toy.

You should never hit, smack or yell at your puppy. This can result in your puppy being fearful and aggressive.

You may also want to consider using a shaker or similar noise to discourage inappropriate behaviour.
