The Puppy Guide: All you need to know about getting and looking after a puppy.

How can we prepare our puppy for the arrival of our baby?

Just as you would discuss a baby's arrival with a sibling it is important to prepare your puppy too.

Here are some suggestions of how you can do this:

  • Try to introduce your puppy to any other babies as soon as you can. Reward your pup for calm behaviour and discourage any negative behaviour.
  • Before the birth you can get your puppy used to the sights and sounds of a baby by playing him a recording of a baby crying and carrying a doll with you around the house as if it were real.
  • Once the baby has been born it may be helpful for a member of the family to take home a piece of the baby's clothing for the puppy to smell so he can get used to it before the baby comes home.
  • When you first introduce the baby to the puppy let him sniff him/her and reward calm behaviour.
  • Puppies and babies should NEVER be left alone together unsupervised.
