The Puppy Guide: All you need to know about getting and looking after a puppy.

Should my puppy be allowed to go up and down stairs?

Until they are adults the joints and ligaments in a puppy can be easily damaged by excessive and energetic climbing up and down stairs. Puppies can also be quite un-coordinated and fall down the stairs easily if they are not careful.

Young puppies should not be allowed to climb up or down the stairs. Older puppies should be okay to go up and down a few times each day as long as he does so in a calm way and does not run. Encourage him by walking up and down calmly yourself, so he can follow your example, and discourage any running or energetic behaviour.

If you want to prevent your puppy going up and down the stairs you should consider installing a baby gate.
