The Puppy Guide: All you need to know about getting and looking after a puppy.

How often will my puppy need to go out to the toilet?

Puppies, like babies, need to go to the toilet often. They will generally need to go to the toilet:

  • On waking in the morning, and last thing at night.
  • After playing and other exciting events.
  • After having a meal.

They will usually need to defecate three times a day and urinate a number of times each day.

As they grow older their bladder control will improve and they will need to go less often. Signs to look out for that your puppy may need to go to the toilet include:

  • Circling on the spot with their nose to the ground.
  • Being distracted or a sudden loss of interest in an activity.
  • Tapping their leg or walking in a strange way.
