The Puppy Guide: All you need to know about getting and looking after a puppy.

When should we get a puppy neutered or spayed?

Male puppies are usually neutered somewhere between 6 months and 1 year old. For bitches, some vets recommend that spaying is done before her first season and others say after. It should never be done during the season. It is best to seek advice from your veterinary surgeon who can recommend a specific age for your puppy to be spayed or neutered.

Being spayed or neutered can mean your puppy will be at the vets overnight or for the most part of the day. It is a major but routine operation. Your puppy will need a general anaesthetic, will be drowsy for a number of hours after the operation and may take a few days to get back to being his/herself.
