Why should I not feed my puppy chocolate?

Chocolate and any product containing chocolate or cocoa, meant for human consumption, should never be fed to a puppy or dog.

Chocolate contains a chemical called theobromine. This chemical is harmless to humans and affects us in a similar way to caffeine. However, theobromine is digested much more slowly in dogs and other animals. In small doses it can display symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, restlessness, diarrhoea, muscle tremors and increased urination or incontinence. In larger doses this chemical can result in death of your puppy. For small breeds a lethal dose could be as little as ½ a square of dairy milk chocolate.

Chocolate that is designed especially for puppies and dogs and bought from a reputable pet store is fine to give to your pup.
