What are the benefits of our puppy being spayed or neutered?
Puppies should be sterilised to prevent unwanted pregnancies as well as undesirable mating behaviours. For bitches this is called 'spaying' and for dogs it is called 'neutering'. Spaying or neutering lowers the risks of certain cancers developing later in the puppy's life.
Un neutered bitches are more prone to certain conditions at a later stage in their lives than those that have been neutered. They can develop a false pregnancy, pyometra and mammary tumours.
A male dog can, if highly sexed, mount people and objects around the house. Un neutered males can be aggressive, in particular to other dogs, and they may mark their territory both in the house and outside. They will wander off if they sense there is a bitch in season nearby and can develop a habit of chasing things such as cars, which can be quite dangerous.
