The Puppy Guide: All you need to know about getting and looking after a puppy.

What kind of food should we be feeding our puppy?

You should always begin feeding a puppy the same food that the breeder was using. Sometimes the breeder will give you a food sample to take home with you for the first few days of feeding your pup. If you need to change the food your puppy is eating always do so gradually as a sudden change in their diet can upset their digestive system.

A puppy should always be fed food designed specifically for puppies. They have different dietary requirements to adults and so adult foods are not suitable. As your puppy grows you will need to 'upgrade' and change its diet to a more adult food. When looking to buy treats for your puppy make sure your puppy is old enough to eat them. Most treats will state the minimum age on the packet.

You can give your puppy some of the same type of foods as we humans eat, as an occasional treat or to vary their diet every so often. Dogs particularly enjoy chicken (but not chicken bones as they can splinter), liver, roast dinners, cheese and banana. When your puppy is small always cut up the food into bite size pieces. Do not feed your dog processed food or microwave meals and NEVER give a dog chocolate that is meant for human consumption.

Make sure your puppy has access to clean drinking water at all times.
