What size crate should I buy for my puppy?

The crate you buy for your puppy should be big enough for your puppy to stand up in, turn around easily and lie down. It makes sense to buy a crate that will last until your puppy is fully grown if you can, rather than having to buy another in a few months' time. However, if your crate is too large for your puppy you may wish to partition some of it off to discourage your puppy from eliminating in there. Puppies do not like to lie in their own waste.

You should make sure your puppy has clean blankets or bedding in the crate, especially at night time. Put some newspaper down in one corner or area for him to eliminate on. Also include toys in the crate and fresh drinking water at all times. Some crates come with a water bowl that attaches to the side of the crate.

You may need to consider having a travel crate, for rides in the car, or for your puppy to sleep in if you take it with you when you stay with family.
