Should I buy a puppy from a breeder or get a rescue dog?
You should consider carefully whether to obtain your puppy from a breeder or rescue centre. There are advantages and disadvantages to both.
Getting your puppy from a breeder:
- You choose which breed of puppy you want.
- You may get to pick your puppy from a number in the litter and have a choice of a male or female puppy.
- A breeder will usually have in depth knowledge of the particular breed they are selling.
- You have to pay for the puppy, and this could be quite a substantial sum, depending on the breed.
- You may have to travel a distance to get the breed you want.
- You may have to wait until the puppies are ready to leave the mother.
Getting your puppy from a rescue centre:
- You will be doing your bit for society as most rescue centres are charities and rely on volunteers.
- A member of the rescue centre will usually do a home visit to find out what dog would suit you and to make sure you know what is involved in taking in a rescue dog or puppy.
- Rescue centres do not often have puppies to re-home; they are more likely to have adult dogs.
- The rescue centre will help to match you with the best dog to suit you and your lifestyle.
- There may not be a large choice of breeds to choose from and many will be cross breeds.
- Some puppies may have problems but you should always be told of the dog's history and background before you take him/her home.
- You will usually be asked to make a donation towards the rescue centre when you take on a dog.
