Puppy Equipment
There will be a number of items of essential equipment you will need to buy before you bring your puppy home. There will also be other items and accessories you will need as your puppy grows.
- Collar with an identity tag - it is a requirement for the dog's address to be written on the tag.
- Lead - essential for taking your animal on walks. You may also find it useful to get a very long lead for recall training.
- Crate - a crate provides a great place for your puppy to sleep and a safe place to put him/her when you have to leave it alone.
- Bedding - you will need a number of sheets or blankets for your puppy to sleep on. It may be useful to keep them in different rooms of the house for when your pup wants to snooze and he will probably urinate on bedding at night so they will need changing daily.
- Water and food bowls - generally the bigger the better, and try to get anti-tip bowls as this will prevent the bowls tipping over as your dog is eating/drinking.
- Grooming products - such as a brush for the coat and nail clippers for the puppy's nails.
- Poo bags or a poopa scoop - you should always pick up after your dog defecates in any public area.
- Toys - Puppies and dogs love to chew and play, and I'm sure you would rather they play with their toys than your slippers, electrical wires ornaments or other items! Always buy toys that are made specifically for dogs. Human toys are not suitable as they will easily be destroyed and may have parts that will be harmful or a choking hazard to your dog.
- Treats - You can buy treats specifically for puppies from pet stores, or you can make your own from food such as cheese and liver. Use treats for training and rewarding your puppy.
- Towels - are very useful for drying your puppy's paws, drying after being out in the rain and after a bath.
- A crate for transportation or a harness seat belt - essential for taking your dog in the car. In the event of an accident an unrestrained dog can severely injury themselves and others around them.
- A book on dog training - we recommend Victoria Stilwell's 'It's Me or the Dog'.
